If you’re looking for an attractive alternative to paper for your Christmas gifts, which won’t be torn up and thrown away, try wrapping them in colourful cloths called furoshiki. These traditional Japanese wrapping cloths have been used to carry gifts, clothes and food for centuries.
These square cloths can range in size from 10 cm (4 inches) to several metres (yards), depending what needs to be wrapped. They are usually made of cotton, silk, nylon or rayon, which is dyed or printed. Or you can make your own from scarves or pretty fabric.
To wrap a gift, place object in the middle of a cloth, tuck in two opposing corners, fold and drape cloth around object, then tie the two remaining corners in a secure knot. There are hundreds of ways to fold a furoshiki, which is half of the fun!
