Most people associate timber veneer with retro 1950s furniture but these pieces tend to feature fake woodgrain laminate.

Real veneer is the technique of cladding furniture with thin layers of timber and has been around since the ancient Egyptians.

During the Renaissance European craftsmen created ever more intricate and ornate veneer inlays for cabinetry. By the 1800s veneer was used as a way to give common timbers an expensive face while modern veneers are used to decorate furniture.

Here are three easy DIY furniture makeovers that use timber veneer.

For these projects we used a 1220x1220mm sheet of craft ply in birch, about $130 from hardware stores. As well as timber veneer, you will need contact adhesive, a craft blade and stain or varnish.
